When you are just starting out rock climbing, you could feel overwhelmed by rock climbing best practices. However, if you take it one step at a time – just like your climbing – you will find that it is not as overwhelming as it seems. Here are four tips to help you as you start out rock climbing.

Check Your Climbing Route

Map out where you will climb before you actually do it. This will get you mentally prepared for the climb. Visualize your route and then you climbing up this route. Additionally, imagine how your feet and hands will be positioned as you make the climb.

Watch Your Center of Gravity

When you’re climbing, you want to make sure that your center of gravity is in a balanced position. To do this, make sure that your body is as close to the rock wall as possible. Of course, there will be times when you will need to move away from the rock wall. For example, if you need to spot-check your upcoming route. However, these movements should be swift and so that they return you to the rock wall quickly.

Do Not Over Grip

Try to relax your grip as you are climbing up the route. If you over grip, the muscles in your arms will become tired, which will inhibit your climb. It’s a human tendency to grab onto something especially if you feel like you’re falling. However, grabbing on too hard while rock climbing is self-defeating. As you advance in your climb, check your grip to make sure that you are not inadvertently clenching your hands. Even though this could slow you down initially, you’ll get the hang of it and it will become second nature.

Work on Your Coordination

When you first start out rock climbing, you may have many points of stopping and then resuming. This is okay. As you continue climbing and become more experienced, your movements will become more fluid. When you work on your coordination, you will learn to synchronize the movements of your hand with your feet as you climb up the rock wall. The more control that you feel over the climb, the more fluid your movements will be. If you are a nervous novice, you may feel tempted to make nervous movements such as fiddling with your hands or feet. This will cause you your body to shake, which could lead to more nervous movements. Try to stay in control of your movements as you rock climb.
